  • Data collection arrangements

The tissue samples under this "Female Reproductive Tract Tissue Resource" support clinical research studies that focus on enhancing the understanding, at a cellular and molecular level, of benign gynaecological complaints with major impact on women's health/ quality of life. Such conditions include for example: abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), uterine fibroids, endometriosis.
Participants are identified through our gynaecological service in NHS Lothian. Detailed written patient information is discussed with each participant by experienced research nurses prior to completion of consent.
The tissue samples are largely surplus to diagnostic requirements, although some are research samples only. Tissue and tissue derivatives may be stored, for example, as paraffin blocks, frozen for RNA studies, placed in culture medium for in vitro studies. The type of data linked to the samples depends upon the needs of each research study but normally includes patient demographics and diagnosis. These data are derived from health records and are held on a secure database. Tissue samples are all stored in the University of Edinburgh, Queen's Medical Research Institute.

Will ensure tissue resource operates within ethical and legal frameworks and that accurate record keeping and security of data and samples is maintained
