Research summary
This study aims to explore the motivations, context and cognition's (thoughts)of women who have used intimate partner violence towards their male partner. It aims to explore this from the female's perspective. It also aims to consider what psychologists refer to as "Implicit Theories" (IT's). These can help explain the way in which an individual involved in offending sees the world and explain their actions and behaviour. A particularly strong view of the world may reinforce offending behaviour.
Professionals working within the Willow or local criminal justice teams in Edinburgh will be asked to identify women who have been involved in intimate partner violence towards their partner. The Willow Service is jointly funded by NHS Lothian and The City of Edinburgh Council. It aims to address the needs of women who are involved in or are at risk of offending using a holistic approach.
