Research summary
FEEDs is a Feasibility Study to evaluate the usability of parent/ caregiver captured videos of children’s feeding and eating skills for clinical assessment.
Paediatric feeding disorders are common: 25% of children are reported to present with some form of feeding disorder. This number increases to 80% in developmentally delayed children (Manikam R & Perman J “Pediatric Feeding Disorders” J Clin Gastroenterology 2000Jan 30(1).The consequences of feeding disorders are multifactorial with failure to thrive, chronic/ acute lower respiratory tract infections, interrupted development and distress for both family and child.
Assessment of children's feeding / eating skills however is challenging and misses out on the reality of day to day experiences managed by the child and family. Smartphone apps are becoming widely available. The study sponsors believe that the use of home based videos can help Speech & Language Therapists assess feeding and abilities in children remotely.
