Research summary
Nottingham University Hospital's Radiotherapy department has recently been awarded the contract for the regional Stereotactic Radiosurgery service for the East Midlands. This is a specialist treatment suitable for some patients with spread of their cancer to their brain (brain metastases).
This group of patients can vary in fitness and suitability for treatment isn't guaranteed, therefore, in order to assess them for treatment they have, in the past, been required to travel to Nottingham for assessment.
The DVLA precludes this group from driving so they are reliant on hospital transport, public transport or family/friends to attend appointments. Some of our patient's travel over 2 hours by car each way for a 20 minute appointment, which can mean patients spend the most of a day travelling for this appointment.
We have introduced a new video clinic to aid the assessment of patients remotely from their own home. Essentially the patient and clinical team use software like Skype and Face Time to interact. The patient requires only an device capable of video calls (most smartphones, tablets and laptops today are capable), an email address and internet connection to take part. to minimise the burden of time, travel and expense coming to clinic in person entails. We recognise the burden this places on carers also. The aim of this study to talk to patients and their carers about their experience and perceptions of remote video clinics. Evidence suggests that patients like the convenience and lack of travel however there is a lack of robust qualitative patient feedback in the general and no studies whatsoever in patients with brain metastases.
