  • Research summary

Background: Obesity is one of the most pressing health concerns worldwide and childhood obesity is increasing across the UK. Our team has developed a childhood obesity risk estimation tool (SLOPE CORE) and child poverty, food poverty and green space access measures based on the area lived in. These measures have been combined on one platform called the Wessex FRIEND, along with a social network intervention called Genie (Generating Engagement in Network Involvement).

Aim: The aim of this study is to test the feasibility of applying the Wessex FRIEND toolbox is a healthcare setting. This will enable the toolbox to be refined in preparation for wider roll out.

Methods: This study will utilise mixed methods to undertake feasibility testing of the Wessex FRIEND toolbox, within midwifery services at University Hospital Southampton. Participating midwives will recruit families to the study, and then use the toolbox and intervention during one or more of their routine appointments. Focus groups will then take place with both the midwives and families enrolled in the study to gain a more detailed understanding of the feasibility of the toolbox in this setting.

Implications of the research: This research will test the feasibility of the Wessex FRIEND toolbox. It will highlight any changes needed and allow us to refine the toolbox and ensure that it is acceptable for use in practice. It will help us to better understand the context in which the tool will be implemented.
