  • Research summary

After treatment for bone and soft tissue tumours, survivors have disabilities and may find it difficult to perform physical activities such as walking or climbing stairs. Physical activity in this patient group has been traditionally measured using clinical examination and questionnaires, but this kind of assessment is limited.
We aim to explore use of new devices as objective measures of physical activity in patients treated for bone and soft tissue tumours, in hospital and at home. These new devices are the Open Source Movement Sensor, similar to a pedometer, the Xsens which is a wireless motion tracking system, similar to those used in the film industry and the Kinect device which captures the three dimensional position and movements of people in space.
We would like to explore whether these devices can be used in this population and whether they give us more meaningful information than older methods.
