Research summary
Obesity can prevent the kidneys filtering blood and removing fluid effectively. Conventionally, weight loss strategies include a constant reduction in energy intake. Novel weight loss strategies using intermittent fasting may improve weight loss, and promote maintenance of weight losing behaviours. This study aims to test the acceptability of this novel strategy, compared to our standard weight management programme of a reduced energy diet, exercise and weight loss education for obese patients with reduced kidney function. We will test this using a research design called a randomised controlled trial. Patients are assigned to either standard weight management programme, or the intermittent fasting treatment by chance, just like tossing a coin. Acceptability will be measured by willingness of patients to join the study, rate of dropping out and weight loss, compared to our standard weight management programme.
