  • Research summary

Many people experience difficulties with organising their behaviour and problem-solving (also known as executive functioning) after they have a stroke. This can have serious and wide-ranging consequences for their wellbeing and ability to regain independence. While the importance of regaining these skills has been recognised, there is not enough research evidence to recommend any particular interventions for executive functioning after stroke. We want to research a treatment to help people regain organisational and problem-solving skills, in order to make it easier to set goals and achieve them. This is a short-term, online intervention, so that it can be delivered to as many people as possible. Before researching whether the intervention is effective we want to run a pilot version and ensure that the definitive trial will run smoothly. We will aim to recruit 50 stroke survivors and randomly allocate them to either receive the executive functioning intervention or a course with information about stroke. Both will have two modules and consist of a recorded video and handouts, as well as a weekly task. We will ask people to fill in questionnaires assessing their mood, quality of life, and executive functioning at the beginning, end, and one month after completing the treatment. In addition, we will collect information about relevant practical aspects of the research, such as how long it takes us to recruit participants and how many people drop out.
