Research summary
Multi-site feasibility randomized controlled trial of the On the Road to Recovery psychological therapy (OTRTR) compared to treatment as usual. Fifty participants will be recruited from participating secure mental health services in Scotland and randomly allocated to complete either OTRTR in addition to treatment as usual (hereby referred to as the OTRTR condition) or treatment as usual alone (hereby referred to as the TAU condition) for approximately 12 weeks. OTRTR is a brief low intensity group therapy that aims to improve patients’ insight into their mental disorder and develop adaptive coping skills to manage their distress. Participants in TAU will continue their usual therapies and activities with the exception that they do not complete OTRTR during their involvement in the study. Primary feasibility outcomes relate to acceptability and feasibility of trial procedures, including participant recruitment and retention rate, as well as OTRTR therapy completion rate. Primary clinical outcomes include change in insight and coping skills from baseline to the post intervention assessment point (12 weeks). Secondary clinical outcomes relate to participants’ self-esteem, mental health recovery progress, and global indicators of mental health. Further exploratory analyses will determine how week-to-week change on the primary clinical outcomes correspond to different phases of the intervention, identifying the most ‘active ingredients’ of the OTRTR program. Participants will be assessed again after a 3-month follow up phase.
