Research summary
The concept and implementation of self-monitoring is not new to chronic conditions management. Utilisation of a portable monitor to obtain a small blood droplet is already an established feature of diabetes care with patients using Blood Glucose Monitors (BGMs) to record glucose levels and report to their health professionals accordingly (Franz et al 1994, Goldstein et al 1995, Cameron 2009).
It is therefore the objective of this Pilot Feasibility of Anticoagulation Self Testing (FAST project) to establish, from the perspectives of patients and primary care clinical staff, the operational practicability and acceptability of home based self testing of INR’s.
This project would represent a practical advancement in the engagement of patients on long term oral anticoagulation treatment in their own condition management as well as reducing the level of demand on clinics to lead on INR testing and is an approach which is advocated as part of condition management by the NPSA (2007). Members of the clinical community with whom the research team has engaged have shared that this approach would constitute a natural way forward in community based healthcare delivery.
