Research summary
The UK Diet and Diabetes Questionnaire (UKDDQ) is a brief and reliable tool designed to enable healthcare professionals to assess diet quality. It was designed and validated at the University of Bristol, is free to use and can be used in people with or without diabetes.
The aims of the study are threefold: 1) to determine whether the UKDDQ is sensitive to change following a fixed intervention in Weight Management services, 2) to determine whether the UKDDQ can detect differences in diet between patients with severe obesity and a comparator group that is representative of the general UK population, 3) to determine whether the UKDDQ is suitable for use as an outcome measure in Weight Management services.
To achieve these aims, the research team will recruit at least 50 patients starting their involvement with the Weight Management services at Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool. These participants will be asked to complete an electronic version of the UKDDQ at their first clinic appointment, as well as to consent to their hospital records being used to ascertain baseline demographics of the cohort.
To provide a comparator group, we will use data collected from a previous study by our research team that assessed whether the UKDDQ was able to detect differences in diet between people with healthy weight and those with overweight and obesity. This study received ethics approval from the University of Liverpool Research Ethics Committee
Patients attending the Weight Management services will be followed up after 6 months to assess for any changes in their UKDDQ score following advice from the Weight Management Team.
