Research summary
Gonorrhoea infections are increasing, especially in men. There is evidence that there are changes in the type of sex people are having and who with, for example having multiple relationships. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is a test done on a sexually transmitted infection (STI) sample, like gonorrhoea, that helps understand how STIs are spread amongst different and similar groups of people. This has the potential to help sexual health staff know the best tests, treatments and advice to give to patients.
We will conduct three studies to understand how we might use WGS results in the future in sexual health clinics. In study A, we will interview 10-15 straight men who have been diagnosed with gonorrhoea. In study B, we will speak to 12-16 sexual health clinic staff (doctors, nurses and health advisors). In study C, we will speak to 6-8 representatives from key professional groups, community organisations and charities.
Collectively, this research aims to understand if study participants think WGS results are useful and acceptable to them. We hope this research will identify any concerns that could be addressed to improve future use of WGS results.
