  • Research summary

Moderate to severe acquired brain injury (ABI) is a leading cause of death and disability in children and young people in the UK, with around 35,000 emergency visits annually. Fatigue—both physical and cognitive—is a prevalent and debilitating symptom in children and young people with ABI, significantly affecting academic performance, social participation, and overall quality of life. Despite its impact, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, and treatment options are limited. As a first step to try to develop a mechanistically informed intervention, our aim is to characterise different phenotypes of fatigue symptoms and their neural bases.
