Research summary
Aim: Perinatal OCD has a significant impact on functioning for both mother with OCD and the father supporting them. Despite wanting to support their partners, fathers report having minimal contact with health professionals (Darwin et al, 2017) and can feel excluded from services which support mother and baby (Royal College of Midwives, 2007). There is a need to investigate how fathers understand and make sense of the disorder, how it effects their relationships and understand the experience of access and barriers to professional support.
Research Question: How do fathers experience their partner’s perinatal OCD?
Research Design: Qualitative; Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith, Flowers & Larkin, 2009); semi-structured interviews based on interview guide.
Sampling Design: Non-probability, purposive sampling
Sample Size: 7 fathers.
Recruitment: A4 colour poster located on a display board in a specific NHS service waiting room.
Potential outcomes: Findings may lead to recommendations for clinical practice, as well as contributing to the existing literature on perinatal OCD.
