Research summary
With a growing elderly population, surgeons are tasked with a greater risk of mortality rates. However, there is a fundamental difference in the fitness of patients at different ages. What one frail patient of 50 may die of, a healthier patient of 80 may survive. Physiological frailty is a significant issue for patient outcomes, though frailty has yet to be universally agreed upon and identified, and so routinely screening for frailty is a difficult task. It is our intent to implement, assess and compare multiple frailty screening tools and follow the quality of life profile for the elective colorectal surgery patients. We will closely monitor complications following surgery and as patients to complete quality of life assessments at 30 days, 3 months and 6 months post-op. We will be able to determine which frailty screening method most strongly correlates with the patient’s true frailty level, as determined by the cumulative deficit model. This information will enable us to determine the feasibility of implementing a routine frailty screening tool in the surgical pathway.
