Research summary
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disabling disease of the brain and
spinal cord (central nervous system). The immune system attacks the
protective myelin sheath that covers nerve fibers and the disease causes
nerve degeneration or loss. A number of susceptible genes and risk
factors for the development of the disease have been described.
Nevertheless, relatively little is known about the effects of genetic or
epigenetic predictors on disability progression. We are aware of
significant hereditary factors affecting longevity. Hence, we want to
explore the relation of family longevity and disability progression among
MS patients in a cross-sectional study by using self-reported
questionnaire. Information about family history, personal history and
current health condition of MS patients will be included in this research.
We anticipate that the results of this study may provide a new
perspective to predict the severity and progression of disability in MS.REC name
