  • Research summary

This study aims to understand family factors that help and hinder uptake, adherence and maintenance to physical activity (PA) following a myocardial infarction (MI). Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a programme of education, psychological support and PA for cardiac patients. It occurs across four phases moving from a hospital to community setting. Phases three and four focus on PA. Although benefits of CR include reduced hospital admissions, only 42% of individuals take up CR programmes, and adherence and maintenance are low for those that do. Family support has been suggested to help improve long term management of health behaviours, consequently helping to maximise patient recovery. By understanding family factors that help and hinder PA engagement during and after CR, the findings from this study aim to support long term PA engagement and prevent secondary MIs.

In-depth interviews will be conducted with post-MI patients and individual(s) who patients believe to be influential in their care and wellbeing, at three time points during the year (within one month, four months and nine months’ post MI) to explore family support and PA uptake, adherence and maintenance. Post-MI patients will be invited to take part in the study by the cardiac nurse (CN), and will be asked to Invite individuals who they believe to be influential in their care and wellbeing. It is thought that interviews will take place in participants’ home, to encourage them to talk openly and comfortably about their experiences. Interviews are expected to last approximately an hour, although it is understood some may be shorter/longer than this. Interviews will be transcribed word for word and analysed using an electronica qualitative analysis package. Analysis will involve the research team becoming familiar with the transcripts to make meaning from the participant’s personal experiences.
