  • Research summary

This project aims to understand how family relationships and young people’s ability to manage emotions may be linked to mental health difficulties. Research shows that when family life is stressful or there is frequent conflict, young people may then struggle to control their emotions which could result in behavioural or emotional difficulties.

The current study aims to assess these relationships by collecting self-report data from adolescents regarding their family functioning, use of specific emotional regulation strategies (suppression, rumination, problem solving) and externalising and internalising symptoms.

Analysis will then test whether there is a relationship between family functioning and adolescent internalising and externalising symptoms and whether these relationships are mediated by adolescents use of certain emotional regulation strategies.

Participants will be recruited via NHS participating services. Clinical staff will provide information about the study to eligible patients and pass on information sheets so they can make an informed choice to take part or not.

Secondary school recruitment will focus on young people same age range 13-18 and facilitated by staff and researcher.
