  • Research summary

When a family member has a mental health difficulty, families are understood to be a source of support for their family member’s recovery. However, family members who take on the responsibility of care for their family member, can also be significantly negatively impacted e.g. suffer increased stress, financial burdens.

There is a lack of information about families’ experience when their family member has a mental health difficulty, and additionally enters a forensic mental health hospital having committed a crime. There is no published research that has asked families about their experience in adjusting when their family member enters a forensic mental health hospital. This research will ask family members about their experience, themes within these interviews will then be identified, these themes will produce a foundation for further research, which could then better inform the policies and strategies that are produced to support patients in forensic mental health hospitals and their families. Better informed policy could have benefits for patients, their families, forensic mental health services and society.
