  • Research summary

Family interventions for psychosis were developed to address the impact of the family atmosphere on experiences of psychosis and have been reported to be effective in reducing relapse rates in addition to having positive benefits for relatives. It is recommended that people with psychosis should be offered both individual and family interventions as part of their standard care. Although there is a plethora of research regarding involving families in the care of a person with psychosis, and children in other types of family interventions, the literature lacks specific research concerning how to involve children in family interventions for psychosis.

Recent research investigated practitioners’ views of involving children in their parent’s family intervention for psychosis. This study aims to investigate the views of families on children’s involvement in family interventions for parental psychosis, to increase understanding of the families’ perspectives, as it is known that parental psychosis impacts a child’s own emotional wellbeing (Manning & Gregoire, 2009).

Participants will be parents and their children who have taken part in a family intervention for psychosis within the NHS. Families who took part in the intervention without their children will also be participants. Semi structured interviews will be used and the family will firstly be interviewed together at their usual place of mental health care. Each family member will be then be interviewed individually, with consent, which can take place via telephone, skype or face-to-face. Interviews will last up to two hours and will be completed by October 2021.
