Research summary
Family involvement preferences in inpatient mental health treatment: Survey of recently admitted patients (FAM-Survey)
This study will take place in inpatient mental health wards. The aim is to find out about how patients feel about involving their family and friends in their hospital treatment. This study is being conducted because there are very few research studies that have explored this important issue.
300 patients across four mental health trusts in England will be asked to complete a short survey soon after their hospital admission (0-3 days from admission), one week after their admission (5-9 days) and two weeks after their admission (12-16 days). Only patients who have the capacity to consent to research participation will be invited to participate. The survey will include questions about their preferences regarding the involvement of family and/or friends in their hospital care. It will be made clear that the survey is for research purposes only. The data will be analysed to see how much involvement patients want, and whether their preferences tend to stay the same or change during their hospital stay. The survey results will also be used to identify any potential factors (e.g. diagnosis, gender) that might be related to patients’ family involvement preferences. The survey has been designed based on discussions with service user and carer groups, as well as qualitative interviews with patients, carers and staff members. This study is being conducted as part of an NIHR-funded Doctoral Research Fellowship (DRF-2015-08-071) titled, “The involvement of family and friends in inpatient mental health care: what do patients want?”.
