  • Data collection arrangements

The key concept is that data always resides with the original location for as long as possible. This is to ensure that data stays in the organisation where it was generated and under the care of that organisation rather than creating a new centralised copy of the data. This ensures the data controller retains control and that national data opt-outs can be checked repeatedly, up to the point that the data is effectively anonymised for a specific and approved research project. The data will only move out of each Data Collection Centre, once it has been effectively pseudonymised and to a location that has been approved by the Access Committee.

Therefore, data will be made available via this secure process for any data that has been collected as part of routine care in the data collection sites.

  • Research programme

The aim of the FAIRdata4Research project is to deliver improved access to data for research purposes. By adhering to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable), and creating a standardised and transparent process for researchers to request access to data for research from study sites we will ensure that data that has been approved for research purposes is well-described, easily discoverable, and ready for reuse in diverse contexts. Data will be shared and researchers given access to the data via a secure environment. The management committee will oversee the approval of environments as being appropriate, but in the first instance any of the NHS England Secure Data Environments will be deemed as appropriate. These platforms will become the main route for accessing NHS data for research in the future.
