    SUMMARY
The finding of an abnormal profile of toxic compounds of bacterial origin in patients with ITP has suggested that faecal antigens might lead to the production of antibodies which cross react with other tissues including platelets. Such a mechanism might be a cause of thrombocytopaenia in ITP. This study will test that hypothesis by investigating whether the abnormal metabolic profile found in the urine correlates with an abnormal faecal bacterial flora revealed by routine culture of the bacteria in faeces together with Illumina sequencing of bacterial DNA. Such evidence may lead to new methods of diagnosis, and to treatment of ITP by manipulation of the intestinal microflora.
