  • Research summary

The purpose of this investigation is to explore factors of uptake and non-uptake to the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trusts (WLCTs) Active Living Referral Scheme (ALRS). The ALRS is an exercise referral scheme (ERS) which aims to improve physical and mental health through physical activity (Physical Activity and Nutrition Network Wales, 2015). However, of the total number of referrals to the scheme each year, a significant proportion (30%) do not uptake the programme. By understanding the factors that influence uptake, the finding from this study aim to inform future interventions to increase uptake to the ALRS.

Qualitative semi-structured interviews will be conducted with “uptakers” (individuals who have booked and attended a consultation with a member or the ALRS team) and individuals who do not book or attend a consultation with a member of the ALRS team (DNAs), to explore the reasons of starting and not starting the programme. Individuals referred to the ALRS during October 2015 and November 2015 will be invited by letter to participate in the study. It is anticipated that interviews will be conducted in two Leisure Centres across the Wigan Borough (Howe Bridge and Robin Park), although home interviews will be offered to those unable to reach these locations. Interviews are expected to last between 30-45 minutes and will take an informal approach, encouraging participants to talk openly and comfortably about their experiences. Interviews will be transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed using Nvivo 10. This will involve the research team familiarising themselves with the transcripts, identifying initial codes, and from this, searching, reviewing and defining themes.

This research is fully funded by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trusts Active Living Team.
