  • Research summary

The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing in the pregnant population. During the past 20 years, there has been an almost two fold increase in the prevalence of maternal obesity with BMI’s of more than 30kg/m2 from 7.6% in 1989 to 15.6% in 2007 in England, UK(Heslehurst et. al 2010). This trend will increase future resource requirement for maternal services in the UK.

The aim of this study is to explore the lifestyle of obese pregnant women who are first generation South Asians (not born in UK) versus later generation South Asians (born in UK) and compare with the Europeans.

These women will all have been referred to a Specialist at Antenatal Clinic, University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) owing to being obese. 60 obese pregnant women (30 Europeans, 15 South Asian first generation and 15 South Asian later generation) will be recruited in this study. Interviews will explore their views and behaviour concerning food and physical activity and other related factors prior to pregnancy and during pregnancy through a semi-structured interview with a topic guide. 10 health professionals (Obstetricians, Dietitians and Midwives)will also be interviewed to explore their views on diet, physical activity and environmental factors associated with obesity during pregnancy.
