Research summary
This is a questionnaire study. We want to investigate whether beliefs about illness (illness representations) affect the outcome of physiotherapy for inner ear (vestibular) problems. Two hundred and sixty patients will be recruited from the vestibular rehabilitation department at Guys Hospital and answer a series of validated questionnaires before and after they have completed a standardised physiotherapy programme. The physiotherapy programme is usual care and nothing about their treatment will change. Statistical techniques will allow us to determine the relative importance of illness beliefs, distress and type of condition, in explaining the outcome of physiotherapy. This will help us to adapt physiotherapy for this condition in the future.
