Research summary
NHS policy as well as local research has shown a need to routinely include service user views in service evaluations. However, until recently there has been no valid and reliable instrument for assessing patients’ experience of in-patient neurological rehabilitation. Recently the Neurological Rehabilitation Experience Questionnaire (NREQ) was developed to fill this need. Research has established good face validity, good internal and test re-test reliability, and good concurrent validity of the NREQ.
A further important step in validating the NREQ is to demonstrate that the questionnaire captures the underlying qualitative themes upon which it was based that were identified with service users; i.e. that it has good factorial validity. Data from at least 300 participants will therefore be collected from neuroehabilitation units who use the NREQ as part of routine service evaluation. This will provide a sample of sufficient size to allow confirmatory factor analysis [structural equation modelling (SEM)] to be conducted to determine whether the themes identified in the original investigations map onto those in the final questionnaire. If SEM indicates a discrepancy between the two, principal component analysis will be used to investigate what underlying themes are present in the final questionnaire.
