Research summary
This study aims to explore the impact of facial reconstructive surgery on an individual’s self-concept (i.e. the answer to "who am I?"). In order to do this the study adopts a qualitative methodology to establish the importance and effects of facial change on the four components of self-concept:self-image, self-esteem, social-self and self-schema. The study intends to do this by interviewing individuals, six month post orthognathic (jaw) surgery, asking them to reflect back on their experience at different stages of surgery. From these interviews themes, relating to self-concept, will be drawn out and compared. These themes will be used to establish both fluctuations in component importance as well as monitor the overall developing attitudes around self-concept.
