  • Research summary

Research question: Can changes in facial expressions in critically ill patients be detected in a systematic way using video image analysis?

Background: Facial expressions give non-verbal cues that are important components in the assessment of sick patients. Facial expressions consist mostly of deformations of facial components and their geometric relationships. Recognition of changes in facial expressions could identify earlier patients who might need benefit intensive care treatment.

Eligible patient: Adult awake patients who do not require oxygen therapy evaluated by the outreach team in the ward at North Middlesex University Hospital.

We estimate a total study duration of 8 months, namely:
•Three months to enroll at least 10 patients.
•Three months to analyse the Action Units (AU) or micro-expressions
•Two months for final data analysis
