Research summary
Measurements of the eyelids are very important in Oculoplastic Surgery and Ophthalmology. They are performed before and after surgery and they influence clinical decisions and measure outcomes.
The common current approach in measuring the opening of the eyelids and if an eyelid is droopy, by using a pen torch and a ruler in clinic. There are other ways performed in studies by taking photographs of the patients having an object with known dimensions in the photo and then using software like ImageJ to do the measurements.
A swept source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a diagnostic equipment which by using light can produce highly detailed, 3D images of the front part of the eye and diagnose conditions like cataracts, glaucoma and corneal diseases.
This study will investigate the usage of OCT for the measurement of the eyelid opening and assessment of ptosis. It can provide a very accurate measurement (can measure microns) and is easily usable by technicians so if it's successful it can provide a potential method of performing these measurements in practice. The measurements are also 3-dimensional so offering another perspective not available with the current methods. The scan measurements will then be compared with measurements performed on photographs of patients using the ImageJ software which is open source to assess their accuracy.REC name
