  • Research summary

Previous published research conducted in Leeds has identified various barriers to uptake of sight tests: public perceive sight tests as only relevant for those who need glasses; there is mistrust of high street opticians; the optometry business model means that there is limited geographical access in socioeconomically deprived areas.

Eye Check was set up as a proof-of-concept study to see if a not-for-profit eye examination service could address these barriers. It is only meant as a small tester study, and would also help identify methodological issues before embarking on a larger study.

The project has previously been based in non-NHS community settings with recruitment via community groups. However, we would next like to test whether running Eye Check within the NHS, with recruitment via GPs may be more effective.

Invitation letters will be sent by GPs. Patients will make an Eye Check appointment via the GP. The Eye Check will be conducted in an examination room in the GP practice.

After collecting some basic information needed for clinical purposes, the Eye Check will be performed by a fully qualified optometrist. The optometrist is experienced in conducting NHS domiciliary sight tests and has the appropriate equipment. The Eye Check will focus on eye health and detection of conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic eye disease. There will also be a test of visual acuity so the participant will be advised whether or not spectacles may be needed. However, full refraction will not be performed, a prescription will not be issued, and a participant will need to attend a high street optician if spectacles are needed.

Participants will be given a letter explaining the findings of the Eye Check, and any recommended actions. The GP will also be informed and advised of any actions needed e.g. hospital referral.
