  • Research summary

The research will explore the appropriateness of extra care housing provision for people with dementia, including opportunities offered, barriers created, and whether there is an affordable model of extra care which can be inclusive of people with dementia. Using both published literature and the experiences of those involved in delivering or living in extra care schemes, this research will review current models of extra care for people with dementia. It will explore emerging principles, practices and processes, and consider the influence they have on extra care operating models.

The research will consider whether extra care is an appropriate accommodation care and support option for individuals with dementia, and if so, whether a best practice model can be developed.

The research has one big question - how far is it possible to enable an individual with dementia to live within extra care?

It also has three secondary questions to help determine whether or how easily a person with dementia can live within extra care, and if best practice guidelines can be developed. These will help determine how extra care is perceived by individuals, what could help a person with dementia to live well within extra care, and whether it is achievable. The questions are:

    * What is extra care, and what does it mean to you? How is it developed?
    * Is this model of extra care appropriate for a person with dementia?
    * What modifications to the extra care model might make it more appropriate for individuals with dementia?

The research will then explore what themes or generalisations have been identified and whether or how extra care can support people with dementia. Finally it will explore how any themes and generalisations can be developed into a model of extra care which could best include and support people with dementia.
