  • Research summary

    • Oral cancer is a relatively common disease with high morbidity and mortality.
    • It can arise out of pre-existing lesions such as white patches or red patches in the mouth.
    • It is difficult to predict which pre-existing lesions will go on to progress to cancer.
    • It is also difficult to predict how individual cancers will behave.
    • We and others have previously identified several genes that are altered in oral cancer through genetic analyses (our unpublished data).
    • In this project we want to determine whether it is possible to identify the changes in the routine histopathological specimens by looking at the expression of the proteins that these genes code for, using techniques that are part of normal clinical pathology practice.
    • The study will use anonymised surplus diagnostic pathology tissues.
    • This is very preliminary work that will just tell us whether we can detect the proteins using routine clinical pathology techniques and if there is any obvious difference between normal tissues, premalignant tissues and cancers.
    • The findings will have no bearing on diagnosis or prognosis for the patients from whom the samples are derived.
    • This work may form basis of larger studies with statistically valid sample sizes for any proteins showing obvious differences in expression. These subsequent studies will allow us to see if differences in expression of these proteins are related to behaviour of the premalignant lesions or the cancers
