  • Research summary

This research aims to understand the psychological processes that are related to perceptions of recovery in people who self-harm. In particular the research will explore three psychological variables: Feelings of shame, negative self-perception (i.e. how a person sees themselves) and beliefs someone holds about their self-harm (e.g. beliefs about the function and consequences of self-harm). These variables may play a role in determining whether or not an individual continues to self-harm and in determining their sense of recovery.

Adults with a history of self-harm will be invited to take part in the study. This may include individuals who have previously self-harmed but no longer engage in this behaviour, and individuals who currently self-harm.

Potential participants will respond to advertisements posted: online (e.g. Gumtree); within self-harm support groups; or through leaflets distributed in NHS primary/secondary care and student health services. Clinicians may also share details of the study with potential participants. Potential participants will complete an eligibility screening via telephone with the researchers. Eligible participants will then be invited to attend a face-face meeting with the researchers to complete a series of questionnaires.

The study will use a cross-sectional methodology, asking participants to complete all the questionnaires and measures at a single meeting with researcher, and then exploring the relationships between these variables.
