  • Research summary

Within paediatric psychology outcome measures are a valuable tool to measure the effectiveness of our work. There is a gap for comprehensive wellbeing questionnaire designed specifically for young people with a physical health condition. An outcome measure designed from this client group might more accurately represent their concerns.
This research aims to examine the psychometric properties of the The Health and Wellbeing Questionnaire, a newly developed measure of emotional and physical health wellbeing in 11 to 19-year olds with chronic physical health conditions such as diabetes, cancer and heart conditions.
This study will employ a cross-sectional survey design in which the new measure will be administered alongside questionnaires that it will be validated against. In addition, the new measure will be repeated one to two weeks later, to examine how reliable the questionnaire is.
As the study is pilot test of a measure used in a paediatric service for both inpatient and outpatient, a convenience sample will be taken directly from young people accessing care there. Service users could sign up based on information provided at outpatient centres. Posters would be displayed around these centres with a link or QR code for young people to sign up to.
Recruitment will involve 300 participants with a chronic health condition attending UCLH paediatric service, between ages 11-19. 300 participants is about 30 percent of young people accessing the hospital. This could include diabetes, arthritis, paediatric pain and sickle cell disease. The study will last for about a year and a half. Participants will need to complete the outcome measure online.
