Research summary
The proposed study would aim to explore experiences of developing/receiving a psychological formulation within therapy, from the perspective of current service users of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). This would require CAMHS clinicians to share the formulation section of a session with the main researcher and the participant during a semi-structured interview. The formulation would have been recorded, with consent, on an encrypted Dictaphone during therapy, and where applicable the young person may choose to share a written summary or diagram of their formulation. The young people would attend one semi-structured interview of approximately 1-1.5 hours duration at the CAMHS clinic with the main researcher. Eligible participants would be aged between 11 - 18 years and be able to provide informed consent to participate and have sufficient verbal communication and cognitive ability to participate in an interview about conceptually abstract matters. Following the interviews, the young people’s experiences would be collated into themes using Thematic Analysis. These themes would then be shared with multi-disciplinary professionals in CAMHS to discuss their reactions and any implications this may have on formulation in clinical practice. This would be done via one focus group. The relevance of this study to patients is that formulation is used as standard practice within many psychological therapies yet to date there is little-no available research regarding how people under the age of 18 years’ experience this tool.
