  • Research summary

The National Health Service Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) sets targets each breast screening unit must meet; one such target involves the attendance rate, stating that it must be above 70%. The statistics suggest that there has been a decrease in attendance between the years of 2002 and 2010, reducing from 88% attendance in 2002-2003 to 73% in the financial year 2009-2010 (CRUK, 2013). It is thought that women most likely to not attend their three yearly breast screening appointments are those who have been recalled from a previous breast screening appointment which has resulted in an invasive procedure which has returned a negative result (Maxwell et al, 2013). Such women are often discharged and have little support following their diagnosis. This research aims to explore reasons for attendance and non-attendance at routine breast screening appointments following a benign invasive procedure. Women between the ages of 47 and 73, who are eligible to be invited for breast screening, which have been identified using the National Breast Screening System (NBSS), the database used for breast screening appointments. A qualitative study will take place over a one year period using semi-structured interviews. Participants will be asked to take part in an interview which will last for approximately one hour. It is anticipated that 24 participants will be recruited from one breast screening unit in the North West of England (The Royal Lancaster Infirmary’s Breast Screening Unit).
