  • Research summary

This project follows up from some secondary data analysis conducted on the ELSA (English Longitudinal Study of Ageing) and HSE (Health Study for England) datasets, that aimed to measure the prevalence of unmet need for social care and what predicts unmet social care needs developing.
For this stage of the project we will be conducting 24 face-to-face, in-depth interviews with people aged 60+ who have care needs, with the aim of exploring:
-how people plan ahead for their care needs,
-how they develop unmet needs and adapt to their new situation,
-the role of family, friends and adaptations in meeting care needs,
-how the contact they may have with the health service and local authority have helped or hindered them in meeting their care needs.
The study is expected to last about 6-8 months. Independent Age and Age UK will approach potential participants, who, if interested, will contact Ipsos MORI to express their interest. Ipsos MORI will then recruit participants and conduct the research.
The findings will help to explain the findings of the secondary data analysis in more detail and also to explore issues such as how people's situation changes over time in a way that is not possible from survey data which is collected every two years. By understanding more about what leads to unmet needs for care and its impacts we will be able to make recommendations for policy makers, practitioners, social care users and carers. These may assist in the prevention of future unmet need and mitigation of its impacts.
