  • Research summary

Recent decades have seen a large increase in adult early-onset Type 2 Diabetes (EOT2D) within the UK (Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) occurring between the ages of 18 and 40 years). Unlike older adults with T2D, adults with EOT2D are often facing added physical, psychological and emotional challenges due to major life events that happen alongside diagnosis and treatment. For example, living independently, early career and/or family planning. Despite the growing number of cases and added challenges, adults with EOT2D are offered the same treatment and support as older adults with T2D. In fact, evidence suggests that current diabetes care is not tailored to meet the exact needs of adults with EOT2D. This is largely because these people remain highly under-represented in clinical research. So, the aim of this qualitative study is to explore the unmet needs of this underrepresented population group and their diabetes care. Four focus groups or interviews will be carried out with adults with EOT2D to explore their unmet needs in diabetes care. Interviews will also take place with healthcare professionals (HCPs) to explore current gaps in T2D care planning. These may be done face-to-face or online, on a secure platform, or over the telephone (interviews only). Potential participants will be recruited from Primary care (like GP practices) and Secondary care (like hospital facilities) based in Leicester and London.

This study is funded by the NIHR PGfAR (National Institute for Health Research, Programme Grants for Applied Research). This study will form part of a wider research programme, the M3; an intervention designed and tailored especially, to address the presence of two or more long-term health conditions in adults with EOT2D.
