  • Research summary

To record and analyze the thoughts held by patients regarding their tinnitus in order to gain a deeper understanding of the conscious processes that may be involved in developing chronic tinnitus.

This will be achieved by giving ‘voice’ to patients own words, language and the meanings these imply through interviewing, using a qualitative grounded theory methodology and data analysis.

This will be in order to, at the very least, identify descriptive themes in this area and at the very most, go towards developing a meaningful theory that may help to explain why some people go on to develop chronic tinnitus and others do not, an area where much is still unknown yet qualitative enquiry may serve to clarify.
