Research summary
The project will aim to qualitatively explore the psychosocial impact of receiving PBT therapy for cancer. The broad research questions centre on patients' attitudes towards treatment, their coping mechanisms as they undergo treatment, their overall quality of life both during and post-treatment, and their experiences of having temporarily relocated to NHS funded accommodation throughout the duration of their treatment (if applicable to individual participants). This research is considered important as PBT is an extremely novel treatment, relative to other forms of cancer treatment, with the first patient being treated in the UK in 2018. There are only 2 treatment centres in the UK currently offering PBT to patients, therefore meaning individuals often need to reside away from home. This research will progress the understanding of the wider psychological impact of receiving this treatment in order to help shape future patient experience in cancer services nationally.
