Through utilising an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) qualitative research approach, the proposed study sets out to explore the lived experience of adolescents presenting with medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) within a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (Livewell South West CAMHS). Through applying the processes of IPA the research seeks to collect and analyse rich interview data from the above population the researcher will report their findings to the CAMHS setting and other professionals involved in the study to help inform local pathways and treatment options for adolescents presenting with MUS.
The study further seeks to gain the experience of primary and secondary health care professionals who have extensive experience of working with this population. 6 adolescents aged 13-19 years will be interviewed at three different time points: Pre-treatment; 6 months into treatment; and 1 year or more into treatment.
