Research summary
Although the majority of individuals with major lower limb loss are likely to experience phantom limb pain (PLP), there is a lack of data as to what constitutes effective front-line therapy. Given this lack of clinical data, it is important to explore and articulate the experiences of patients who have first-hand knowledge of managing this phenomenon, and the practitioners who work with them, to improve rehabilitation practitioners’ ability to support patients with pain management. This research has been developed and funded by St Mary’s University, Twickenham, in partnership with the Douglas Bader Rehabilitation Centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton, and will involve patients with major lower limb loss and rehabilitation practitioners from the Douglas Bader Rehabilitation Centre. Those who choose to participate will take part in one semi-structured interview, which will be carried out via phone or video call. Data will be analysed using thematic analysis and the final report shared with staff and patients at the Douglas Bader Centre and used to develop educational resources for new members of staff and individuals with limb loss.
