Research summary
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) relates to conditions of the heart and blood vessels, including heart disease and stroke. CVD accounts for over a quarter of UK deaths, yet the development of it can be reduced (e.g., by stopping smoking).
In 2009 the NHS Health Check programme was launched to reduce CVD in England. This national programme invites healthy people aged 40-74 to have their CVD risk measured every five years. NHS Health Checks are delivered face-to-face, usually by a practice nurse or healthcare assistant following an invitation from their general practice.
The number of people who take up the offer of an NHS Health Check remains lower than intended. Therefore, the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) has identified existing digital products that can be used to deliver an NHS Health Check. They now plan to test two products with patients to understand the acceptability of a digital NHS Health Check.
This evaluation sets to explore the feasibility of a digital option for the NHS Health Check programme through an online survey and interviews with patients who are invited to complete a digital NHS Health Check and local healthcare providers and commissioners who support the project.
The evaluation will be used to inform how a digital option can best be incorporated into the future delivery of the NHS Health Check programme.
