  • Research summary

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Programme (CDSMP) was developed by and is licensed through Stanford University. In Wales, the CDSMP is run by Education Programmes for Patients Cymru (EPP Cymru) through the National Health Service (NHS). This is a community-based six-week course for anyone with a long-term health condition delivered mostly by volunteers who have themselves participated in the programme. CDSMP research has primarily focused on outcomes for participants. One possible outcome is that a participant will train to be a tutor. Volunteer tutors can also train as assessors to take part in the Quality Assurance of the CDSMP. \n\nVery little research has explored the experiences of CDSMP tutors. As people living with long-term conditions who are actively self-managing their conditions and sharing these skills with others in a similar position, CDSMP tutors have an important perspective on the self-management of long-term conditions. \n\nThe proposed study seeks to update understandings of the experiences of CDSMP tutors. Most of the research that has been conducted was undertaken as the CDSMP was rolled out in the UK under the name the Expert Patients Programme from 2001 to 2007. Now the researcher, who is a Master of Science in Health Psychology student and EPP Cymru volunteer tutor and assessor herself, will interview current and former tutors about their experiences of delivering the programme, its effect on their own self-management, and what being a tutor means to them. It is hoped that this could aid recruitment. Interview transcripts will be analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The study will be conducted with EPP Cymru CDSMP tutors within Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, NHS Wales.
