Research summary
Harmful sexual behaviour (HSB) by children accounts for over half of reported sexual offences. Recent clinical guidance points to the inclusion of parents and families in the intervention and treatment of these children. That said, little is known about the experiences or needs of these parents and how services can better engage them.
This study will use a qualitative approach to understand the lived experience of having a son that displays harmful sexual behaviour. It will interview parents of young people (male) who have been referred to the forensic CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health service) service following HSB. The young people themselves will not be interviewed or involved. Participants will be invited for a single annoymous interview lasting approximately one hour. The interview is semi-structured.
