  • Research summary

This is a small scale study, being carried out as part of an MSc programme, at the University of Derby. It is a qualitative study, rooted in phenomenology, using 4-6 semi-structured, face to face interviews with individual participants who have Ankylosing Spondylitis. These interviews will explore their experiences of their condition and using physical activity/ exercise as a management strategy for Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS).
The 4-6 participants, will be patients diagnosed with AS, recruited by members of the Rheumatology Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) at the single site of Chesterfield Royal Hospital, from patient’s attend routine, planned appointments, in Rheumatology Out-Patient clinics.
Members of the Rheumatology MDT will act as gatekeepers to identify potential participants at one hospital site, who meet the inclusion criteria of:
    1. Adult patients 18 years old and over

    2. Able to read, speak and understand English

    3. Diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis confirmed and has attended physiotherapy at some point in their care journey.

The MDT will provide the participant information sheet. Potential participants will be signposted to contact the student researcher if they are interested in participating in the research. The student researcher will receive consent from the participants, if they agree to participate in the project and complete the interview, with audio-recording. The interview will explore the participant’s use of exercise to manage their condition. The interviews will be transcribed, verbatim, by hand and both themed and descriptive analysis of these will be under taken to identify key experiences. This study will be completed by the end of AUG. 2019.
