  • Research summary

Dual diagnosis is arguably one of the most significant problems facing health services. A significant percentage of all patients in general hospitals are thought to be there because of complications related to alcohol consumption, and many people who misuse alcohol and other substances are thought to have at least one mental illness. Substance misuse and mental health problems individually constitute a challenging area of work for health care professionals. In combination, these problems place considerable demands on health services and on individual practitioners, often stretching resources and skills of professionals to their limits. Although it is acknowledged that working with such a patient group is challenging little is known about the specific challenges not only faced by practitioners but, more importantly, the patients themselves. It is, therefore, the aim of this study to investigate the challenges faced by both practitioners and patients and how these challenges impact the treatment and recovery of those people with a dual diagnosis.
A grounded theory methodology will be employed to elicit the personal experiences of participants which in turn will ensure that the production of information materials and the development of theory remain rooted in the data.
This research will adopt an intensive interviewing approach using individual interviews with participants. Intensive interviewing was chosen as it allows the researcher to adopt an open-ended, in-depth exploration of an area in which the interviewee has substantial experience.
