Research summary
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a lifelong condition which causes the lungs and digestive system to become clogged with thick, sticky mucus. This leads to recurrent lung infections and reduced nutrients absorption from food. The average age at death is 26 years, usually from respiratory failure. People with CF can benefit from a variety of maintenance treatments to keep them healthy, by preventing infection and maintaining a good weight. However treatment is burdensome and unsurprisingly adherence to those treatments is often poor.
However, there is a group of people with CF who are able to adhere to their treatments very well, year upon year. This study aims to learn what sustains adherence to nebuliser treatment and to learn what are the routines involved in the process of using nebuliser treatment.
We aim to recruit 24 participants. Their adherence and prescription details will be collected. Participants will be invited to answer a questionnaire, followed by an interview. Finally, participants will be invited to fill in another questionnaire.
The adaptations made by participants to sustain their adherence will be identified from the interviews. Habit strengths of the participants and other determinants of behaviour will be obtained from the questionnaires.
