  • Research summary

The current study intends to recruit adolescents who have been seeking support within mental health services within NHS Lothian following an episode of early psychosis. Young people (age 13-25 years) who meet criteria and deemed appropriate to take part will be identified by the clinicians who are providing their care and asked whether they would like to participate.

The main aim of the study is to explore, using questionnaires in addition to a series of interviews, young peoples' experiences of recovery from early psychosis. The study is interested in how young people think about themselves following an episode of early psychosis and how this affects the process of recovery. The study is also interested in early experiences and how these may have impacted young people and their recovery process.

Eight to 10 young people will be recruited from NHS Lothian mental health services by experienced clinicians providing their care. Young people who consent to participate will receive treatment as usual (TAU) from the clinical team; considering previous published research in the area and recruitment from this service, eight to 10 participants will be aimed for.

The study is a mixed methods design, using interviews and structured measures to gather data; findings will be used to generate hypotheses for larger, future studies. It is hoped that this body of research will inform the development of appropriate interventions for this population that may delay, prevent or reduce the impact of later mental health problems. This area of research is currently in its infancy with limited empirical studies having previously been completed and available in the literature.
